3D Location Scans
After over 80 years it is remarkable just how much remains of the sites and objects that were vital to the success of D-Day. Whilst some like the Landing Craft, Tank LCT have been preserved other artifacts lay partly forgotten and beyond restoration. Sites such as the Mulberry Harbour Phoenix Caisson Construction sites at Lepe in the new forest and Hayling Island are remarkable survivors, and examples of a sites built as a temporary structure. Important reminders of unique or unusual innovations such as the X-Craft submarines in Scotland or the Landing Craft, Barge in Poole harbour are examples of artifacts that are beyond saving.
Heritage organisations recognise the importance of these sites and some even have protected status. However, with limited resources there is little that can be done to save items that represent a moment that is still just about in living memory.
We have compiled examples of sites that have been captured using a variety of 3D scanning methods. These are now represent a digital archive of these important sites.
